Pablo Escobar – born in Columbia on December 1, 1949 – established the Medellin drug cartel in 1976. He became one of the wealthiest men in the world with an estimated net worth of $30 billion US. Pablo was also one of the most ruthless. He routinely massacred anyone who impeded his goal of monopolizing the cocaine trade in the United States. Eventually turning himself in, he was sentenced to prison for five years in 1991. However, he negotiated a deal with President Cesar Gaviria, where he’d be housed in a deluxe facility that Pablo had built. That deal fell through, and Pablo escaped in 1992. Ironically, he shared his fate with many of his victims when on December 2, 1993, he was gunned down by police. Although vilified by the government, his funeral was attended by more than 25,000 people. They likened him to “Robin Hood” and recalled how he’d helped the poor.
